Do you know what the S-OtrH3N2 viruses is? You are probably going to learn more about this new flu strain as it has been confirmed by the CDC as a new Swine Flu strain. This new flu strain is a combination of a very rare North American pig virus (H3N2) and the nortorous 2009 swine flu H1N1 virus. This new strain has come onto the radar of U.S. health officials because 3 Iowian children were infected this month by the S-OtrH3N2 viruse.

Read the two articles below by ABC and USA Today which discusses this new strain and why the CDC and the health official community is concerned.

U.S. health officials remain on the alert for additional cases of a new swine flu strain that infected three Iowa children this month.

The H1N1 swine flu pandemic began in 2009 after flu viruses mutated to create a new strain that humans had never encountered before, leaving everyone vulnerable to infection. Although the H1N1 pandemic proved to be relatively mild, doctors fear new flu …

Since the public has not yet developed immunity to the new strain, the CDC worries it can cause serious health risks. However they have reported that this new swine flu virus does seems treatable with standard anti-viral drugs.

It is imperative that if you think you or anyone in your family has come down with flu like symptoms please consult your doctor immediately.

But for the public health community, swine flu provided a critical case study in how well-prepared we are for a widespread outbreak of novel communicable disease. The pandemic also offers important lessons on the persistence of health disparities and some key findings the philly.com point out are:

While the pandemic didn’t unfold as planners had imagined, advance efforts paid off because they established relationships between different sectors of government;

Government credibility was compromised when vaccine availability didn’t live up to what was promised;

Information about H1N1 risk was communicated effectively to most people, but not to those who spoke little or no English;

The Strategic National Stockpile—the government’s stash of medicine and medical supplies for a national emergency—operated as planned, but gaps in distribution and long-term storage plans were identified.

The article points out that the British scientists identified a vital part buried deep inside the flu virus that seems to not change and is common to all influenza viruses. If you train the body’s immune system (Flu-V vaccine) to recognize this component possible infections from any future strains of the flu virus can be fought off by your own immune system. Read more from the article below.

The new universal flu vaccine, which researchers say only needs to be administered once, has been found to be effective against a number of different types of influenza, including deadly avian flu and pandemic swine flu strains.
It has been reported in Cambodia that some people have fallen victim to the normal seasonal flu and at the same time the much more deadly swine flu. This rare occurrence of the double-flu may create a risk of a super-flu virus mutation. If developed, this type of virus would probably leave the human population with no immunity and the ability to spread from continent almost overnight. Some health experts are saying “something like this is one of the biggest biological threats of our time”. Is this just hype more scare tactics or is this the real deal. Read the reports below.

The potential for bird flu and human flu to combine and form a new virus has been described as ‘one of the biggest biological threats of our time’.
As you can seen there is a lot of hype in these stories. The cases now being reported in Cambodia date back to 2009 during the swine flu outbreak. However health experts and directors of disease control are extremely concerned with this type of dual infection because of a possible genetic mutation and the global health implications.

The shortage number in 2005 was 61 and in 2010 this number increased to 178. These shortages are compromising patient care and are driving up drug costs. It is because of this growing problem that President Obama has told regulators to begin gathering information from the major drug producers about potential shortages. Obama’s measures include asking the Justice Department to look at potential illegal mark-ups by resellers caused by drug shortages. Obama is also asking Congress to pass legislation putting in place mandatory reporting by drug companies on potential major shortages. The following article details more about this current critical situation.

The latest movie with Gwyneth Paltrow, Contagion, is a typical example. Single person becomes infected after visiting a 3rd world country in the Far East then spreads the virus to a few, than thousands, than millions.

What really is frightening about this plot is that today this scientifically could happen.
Two recent outbreaks – the 2009 H1N1 “swine flu”, which originated in Mexico (and is expected to be in circulation again in Britain this winter), and the H5N1 “bird” or avian flu, which emerged in several locations in the middle of the last decade …

If you look at what happened in the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic it makes you wonder what would happen if a virus such this became prevalent.
