H1N1/Swine Flu Virus
In one of the biggest public health clusterfoots in recent history the United States in 1976 started one of the most massive vaccination campaigns history to avert the emergence of a swine flu pandemic. Does this sound familiar.
In 1976, 46 million people were vaccinated against the swine flu virus and 4,000 people developed Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), a neurological disease that can lead to paralysis or even death.
What was troublesome in 1976 and the same today is the speed by which the H1N1 vaccine was and is today developed and rushed to market. Certainly advances today in the medical and scientific fields can explain the quickness by which today’s vaccine has been developed but the lack of a detailed public explanation how this is being accomplished is not giving anyone the confidence we should have. Consumer Reports poll shows that only 35% will probably get the H1N1 Swine flu vaccination. Whatever the news is – good or bad, people would like to know the truth behind the outbreaks and especially vaccine approval process.
In the beginning of this year’s outbreak the CDC was issuing information on H1N1 swine flu including hot spots, primary causes of death and so forth. They also stopped testing suspected cases to positively identify H1N1. All very good information but for some reason the CDC stopped publishing the daily and weekly reports that had detailed epidemiological findings. While I am sure none of us are prone to conspiracy theories, should we begin to wonder why CDC stopped issuing this very important information to the general public.
We would like to know where the outbreaks have been occurring, how many actual confirmed cases there are, what is the demographic and epidemiological data, and what were the confirmed causes of death among H1N1 swine flu victims. Was the swine flu virus the primary cause of death or did a secondary infection such as pneumonia kill the victims which seems to be the case?
There seems to be mystification on how the clinical trials were conducted and the results thereof. Where are the details on the clinical trials, how they were conducted and the processes by which H1N1 swine flu vaccines were fast tracked and approved. Who were the pharmaceutical companies involved? Who were the major investigators? Did the principal investigators stand to financially gain from the outcome of their work? How were conflicts of interest addressed? Did the government insure there was proper oversight with closely monitor clear processes.
There are many families that are concerned about the thimerosal preservative used int he vaccines. Thimerosal is a vaccine preservative that is alleged to be linked to autism. Families have a right to know if the H1N1 vaccines are all preserved with thimerosal however the government is not coming out with these details.
The reports are that some batches of vaccines are preserved with thimerosal and some that don not have the mercury-based preservative. The question that has not been answered is will we have the option of taking one over the other?
The government needs to 100% transparent to the country on the actually truth about the H1N1 swine flu virus and about the vaccine that is being produced. The government is saying just trust us but it is hared to trust the vaccination campaign if the public is not getting full disclosure.
Given all the facts Americans are smart enough to make the correct decisions but we must be given the facts.
